A dive-style bezel over a chronograph dial, in gunmetal rather than steel, on a well-worn shade of brown leather. The cream-coloured markers are the detail that sets the whole tone – they read as aged lume rather than fresh white. Case and Wrist Presence The case is finished in a dark gunmetal grey with a coin-edged rotating bezel around the crystal. Two cylindrical pushers flank a knurled crown on the right flank. Gunmetal sits between steel and black: it has the shape and shadow of a metal case without the flash, which is why this watch looks tougher than the polished versions of the same layout without being any larger. Dial and Legibility Black, with applied markers and hands filled in a warm cream. MOVADO sits above centre with calendoplan S in italic beneath. Three registers are laid out across the middle and lower dial with cream printing on black, and a date aperture sits at six. The bezel carries a numbered count-up scale to sixty with a luminous pip at zero. Cream on black is a softer contrast than white on black and it suits the vintage intent, though it does mean this reads a shade slower in poor light than a plain white-printed dial. Movement and Functions The upper pusher starts and stops the chronograph and the lower resets it, with elapsed time collected in the sub-registers. The date is set from the crown. The bezel turns, so an elapsed period can be marked by lining the zero up with the minute hand – the oldest and still the fastest way to time something you have not decided to time until it has already started. Strap and Fit Mid-brown leather with a visible grain and contrast stitching, thick enough to hold its shape and tapered to a pin buckle. Leather this heavy takes a few weeks to break in properly and then stays comfortable for years, darkening at the buckle and the fold. It suits a gunmetal case better than black would, because the warmth stops the watch reading as entirely grey. Who This Watch Suits Someone who wants a chronograph with a dive bezel and a period feel, and would rather not have a bright steel watch on the wrist. Care and Maintenance Do not work the pushers when the case is wet. Gunmetal plating scuffs where it rubs, so keep grit away and never use polish or an abrasive cloth. Rinse salt or sweat off the bezel edge and dry it. Keep the leather dry. A chronograph is harder on a battery than a plain quartz watch – have a watchmaker fit the next one and reseat the gasket.
