A sunken disc of clear stones inside a wide polished steel ring, on a bracelet of broad hexagonal links. All one colour, all bright, and the only variation on the whole watch is the difference between mirror steel and faceted stone. Case and Wrist Presence The case is polished stainless steel with a dark rim running around the outside edge of the crystal, which gives the front a clean outline against a light background. The bezel is broad and flat and slopes gently inward to the dial. The bracelet is narrower than the case, so the head sits as a distinct disc on the wrist rather than as the end of a strap – the proportion is deliberate and it suits a smaller wrist. Dial and Legibility The centre is paved with rows of small clear stones, tightly set so there is almost no metal showing between them. Above them, on the polished ring, sits the raised steel dot at twelve. There are no hour markers and no minute track. Two slim polished hands cross the middle. Silver hands over a white pave is the least legible combination this design offers, so read it in good light and accept that the watch is doing something other than telling the time quickly. MOVADO is printed on the ring at six. Bracelet and Fit Flat hexagonal links with raised polished centres and brushed outer sections, articulated so the bracelet drapes rather than bridges. Links are removed to size it. Because the case is light and the bracelet narrow, a loose fit lets the head rotate to the outside of the wrist – worth an extra link removed rather than one too few. Who This Watch Suits Someone wanting the sparkle of a dress watch in plain steel rather than gold, so that it sits alongside silver jewellery instead of competing with it. Care and Maintenance Set stones dull from hand cream and soap residue long before they dull from dust. Brush the dial crystal and the bracelet with something soft and dry, and rinse the bracelet occasionally if it has been near soap – then dry it fully before wearing. Polished steel scratches; use a cloth, not a compound. A watchmaker should fit the battery and reseat the case gasket. About the Brand Movado’s museum dial, introduced in 1947, replaced every numeral with a single dot at twelve. Filling the rest of the face with stones is the brand’s dressier reading of that idea, and the dot is what keeps it recognisable.
