Everything on this watch is black except two hands and a dot, and those are gold. Take the gold away and there would be nothing to read at all – which is a fair description of how the design works. Case and Wrist Presence A round case finished in matte black from the bezel to the lug tips, with no polished surfaces to catch light. The bezel is wide and flat, and the crown at three is black as well, ribbed for grip. Because there is no bright edge anywhere, the case outline softens against a dark sleeve and the watch reads smaller than it measures. The lugs turn down sharply over the strap. Dial and Legibility The dial is a flat black disc sunk below a raised black ring, with no indices and no minute track. The gold dot at twelve is applied and slightly domed, so it picks up light from almost any angle. The hour and minute hands are gold-tone, faceted along their length, and they are the only other thing on the face. That combination is unusually legible for a watch this dark: warm metal against flat black is a stronger contrast than white-on-black in most indoor light. Small MOVADO text sits at six. Strap and Fit Black leather, lightly padded through the middle, stitched in black so the seam disappears. It runs into the case between the downturned lugs and takes a set within a week or two. A pin buckle gives you hole-by-hole adjustment, which is worth using properly – a fraction too loose and a blacked-out case turns edge-on and stops being readable at all. Who This Watch Suits Someone who wants black without wanting anonymity. The gold is a small amount of warmth on an otherwise cold design, and it is the reason this version reads as deliberate rather than plain. Care and Maintenance Matte black finishes scuff where they rub – the caseback, the buckle, the underside of the lugs. Keep grit off it and never use polish or an abrasive cloth. Leather should stay dry; a wet strap dries stiff and then cracks at the fold. Let a watchmaker change the battery so the gasket is reseated at the same time. About the Brand The dot at twelve is Movado’s oldest idea, dating from a 1947 dial that removed the numerals entirely. Rendering it in gold on a black watch is the smallest possible change to that design, and about the only one it tolerates.
