\n Gunmetal is an awkward colour to get right — too dark and it looks like a coating, too light and it\nlooks like tarnished steel. The AR1919 pitches it correctly: a matt grey case, a black dial and a tan\nleather strap that stops the whole watch reading as monochrome. \n\n Case and Wrist Presence \n Round, 46 mm, in a soft grey gunmetal finish with almost no gloss to it. This is a big watch and\nthe flat finish is what keeps it from being showy — light lands on the case and stays there instead of\nbouncing off. The\ndate changes at midnight and wants a manual push after a short month. \n\n Strap, Clasp and Fit \n Tan leather, plain and unlined-looking, with a smooth finish and no grain pressed into it. It is the\none warm element on the watch and it lifts the grey case considerably. Tan leather marks more readily\nthan dark brown — water spots and ink show — but it also develops the most character, going darker at\nthe crease and around the buckle holes over a couple of years. \n\n Who This Watch Suits \n Somebody who wants size without shine. At 46 mm this needs a wrist of around 18 cm to sit\nproperly; on anything narrower the lugs will hang over the edge. The grey-and-tan combination is\ncasual, so it works with denim and knitwear far better than with a suit. \n\n Care and Maintenance \n No water rating is printed on the dial, so keep the watch dry. The gunmetal finish is a coating —\ndeep scratches show as brighter metal underneath, so keep it away from door frames and gym equipment.\nWipe the case with a soft dry cloth and let the strap air out on rest days. \n\n About the Brand \n Emporio Armani runs this large three-register case through most of its finishes.
