Emporio Armani Men’s 43mm Chronograph Watch (AR11486)

Brown is an underused colour on a dive-styled watch and it changes the character of one completely. Here the dial and the rotating bezel are both brown, the case and markers are steel, and the strap is brown croc-embossed leather. The result reads warmer and older than the same watch in black would. \n\n Case and Wrist Presence \n The case is 43mm and the bezel is a coin-edge type you can grip with wet fingers. Steel polished on the flanks, so it catches light along the sides while the brown holds the middle. It needs a wrist of about 18cm to look balanced; on a slimmer wrist the bezel width will push it past the wrist bones. \n\n Dial and Legibility \n Thick applied steel batons at the hours, outlined so they lift off the brown, with a printed minute track around the outer edge. Three sunken registers run across the dial and the date sits between four and five o’clock. The dial itself prints 100 METERS. The rotating bezel carries a sixty-minute scale with the numbers at the quarters, so you can set it against the minute hand and read elapsed time straight off the top of the watch. \n\n Movement and Functions \n Quartz, with the chronograph on two pushers. That 100 METERS marking is a 10 ATM rating on the case itself: swimming and showering are fine, scuba diving is not. Note the strap, though. Leather is the limiting part here, not the case, so if you plan to be in water regularly it is worth putting the watch on a rubber strap instead. \n\n Strap, Clasp and Fit \n Dark brown leather with a croc emboss and stitching down both edges. New leather is firm for a week or so, then softens and takes the shape of the wrist, after which the fit stops wandering between holes. Over a year or two the strap will darken along the fold and lighten at the edges. Most people prefer it that way. \n\n Who This Watch Suits \n Someone who likes the dive-watch layout but wants it to work with brown shoes and a tan jacket rather than with sportswear. It is a chronograph you can wear to an office. \n\n Care and Maintenance \n Keep the strap out of water even though the case can take it; repeated soaking rots the backing and lifts the stitching. Rinse the bezel with fresh water after any sea exposure so salt does not grit up the rotation.
