The dial is brown, but not a plain brown – it carries a purple cast that shifts towards aubergine when the light comes off it at an angle. Roman numerals ring the outside and three registers sit inside. Against a bright steel case it is an unusual combination and a quietly good one. Case and Wrist Presence The case is 43mm of polished stainless steel with waisted flanks, so the middle of the case is wider than the lug ends. On a wide watch that shaping matters: it keeps the lugs from reaching past the wrist and makes the whole thing look narrower than the diameter implies. Crown between two pushers on the right, all polished to match. Dial and Legibility Deep brown with a subtle sheen, marked with slim Roman numerals in a lighter tone. Three recessed sub-dials sit at nine, three and six, scaled in fifteens and thirties for elapsed timing, with the date window at four in white. The eagle and the wordmark sit in the upper half. Tone-on-tone numerals are the trade here – the dial looks richer than a black one and is a little slower to read in poor light. Movement and Functions Quartz. Chronograph timing runs from the pushers either side of the crown: the upper starts and stops, the lower resets both hands to twelve. The sub-dials gather elapsed minutes and seconds. The date at four advances at midnight and needs correcting after any 30-day month, through the crown at its first click. Strap and Fit Dark brown leather with a crocodile grain pressed into it, close in tone to the dial so the watch reads as one piece. Brown leather ages far more visibly than black, lightening where it folds and darkening where it sits against skin. Within a year it will look lived in. Take it off before a shower rather than letting it soak – that is what cracks a strap at the lug. Care and Maintenance Do not leave the chronograph running; it is the fastest way to a flat battery. Wipe the polished case with a dry microfibre cloth – it shows fingerprints readily. Have battery changes done by someone who will reseat the caseback gasket properly.
