Daniel Wellington Classic Cambridge DW00100017: Blue, Red and White on Eggshell White
The Daniel Wellington Classic Cambridge DW00100017 is a 40 mm quartz watch with a silver stainless steel case, an eggshell white dial and a woven NATO strap striped in blue, red and white. It is the most colourful of the early Classic NATO watches, and the three stripes bring the only colour on an otherwise plain face. Everything else is kept deliberately quiet: no date, no sub-dials and no extra buttons, only the hours and minutes.
A 40 mm case falls between our men’s and women’s size limits, so the Cambridge is listed as unisex. It will look neat on a slim wrist and will not look undersized on a broader one.
Case and Wrist Presence
The round case is made of stainless steel with a silver finish. It is 40 mm across and about 6 mm thick, which is slim for a watch of this diameter and the reason it sits flat on the wrist. The fixed bezel is narrow, so the dial takes up almost the whole front, and the crown at three o’clock is small and unobtrusive. On a hot day the steel case with a fabric strap is comfortable, because nothing about the construction is heavy.
- 40 mm silver case – cool, neutral steel that lets the strap stand out
- 6 mm profile – slim enough to wear under a sleeve
- Fixed bezel – a smooth, uncluttered outline
Eggshell White Dial
The dial is a soft eggshell white, a little warmer than pure white, with slim silver hands and fine markers set around the edge. The brand name sits beneath twelve o’clock. Since there is no date aperture and no seconds sub-dial, the face stays completely open, and the eye goes straight to the hands. The pale dial also helps the red and blue of the strap look bright rather than heavy, and the silver case frames the whole composition.
- Eggshell white dial – warm and matte rather than glossy
- Time only – no date to correct at the end of short months
- Silver indices and hands – they keep the colour on the strap and not on the face
Movement
The watch is powered by a Japanese quartz movement, as published by the maker for the Classic range. Quartz needs no winding and keeps stable time, so you can pick the watch up after a few days in a drawer and find it still running correctly. The only routine maintenance is a battery change every couple of years, which is a quick job for a watchmaker.
The Cambridge NATO Strap
The strap is a woven synthetic NATO-style band, 20 mm wide, striped in blue, red and white. The band slides through both spring bars and wraps behind the case, a construction that keeps the watch attached even if a spring bar were to fail. The fabric is light, flexible and quick to dry, and the length is adjustable with a metal buckle, with room for wrists of roughly 16.5 to 21.8 cm. The strap is interchangeable, so a leather strap of the same width will change the character of the watch completely. Rinse the band in fresh water if it picks up sweat or salt.
Water Resistance
The Cambridge is rated to 3 ATM, or 30 metres. That is enough for rain, hand washing and accidental splashes. It is not suitable for swimming, showering or diving, so remove it before any of those. Fabric straps are more tolerant of damp than leather, but a wet strap should still be dried before you wear it again.
About the Classic Collection
Daniel Wellington is a Swedish brand founded in 2011 by Filip Tysander, whose idea of a smartly dressed Englishman set the tone for the label. The Classic collection is the foundation of the range, with round, slim cases and clean dials, and many models are named after British towns. Cambridge sits among the early NATO versions, alongside Glasgow and Canterbury, where the strap is the main point of difference and the rest of the watch stays consistent.
Who This Watch Suits
- Wearers who want a bright accent on a minimal watch
- Anyone who likes a lightweight, easy-wearing watch for warm weather
- People who want to build a strap collection around one case
- Gift buyers after a clean, recognisable design
Care and Maintenance
Wipe the case and crystal with a soft, dry cloth. Hand-wash the strap in lukewarm water with a little mild soap if it becomes grubby, then air-dry it fully. Keep the watch away from strong magnets, chemicals and extreme heat. When the battery needs replacing, ask the watchmaker to check the case-back seal so that the 3 ATM resistance is maintained. Keep the watch in a dry place when it is not in use.
